Peau d'Ane

Tous les élèves ont travaillé sur le conte "Peau d'Ane" de Charles Perrault avant les vacances.
Le groupe de Fabienne (CP-CE1) a fait un livre qui raconte l'histoire; les illustrations sont réalisées par les CP.

Weeks 20-25 !

There is so much learning going on in CP at the moment and so much progress being made - it's hard to keep up. Here's a bit of a round-up of what we've done and where we're headed.

We differentiate a lot in the English classroom, some children are working faster in one area than others at the moment, but all of the children in CP are progressing at a rhythm that works for them. I know it is tempting to compare your child to others, but please try not to. Compare your child's ability now to what they could do at the beginning of the year, and marvel at how much progress they have made!

English literacy - All of the CPs are reading and writing now at varying levels. They are all encouraged to do their best and strive to be better every week.

Reading: please do listen to your children read for a few minutes every night. Now that the books are getting longer, you don't have to listen to the entire book, but do listen to a few pages to make sure they are doing ok. I listen to every child read once every two weeks and make sure they are at the appropriate reading level. I always listen to kids read in the library, so be sure to send in their reading books on English Fridays. We'll be working more on comprehension soon too. Children who have finished stage 12 move on to chapter books .

Children can also listen to stories and read along online using the oxfordowl website.

In class, we have read series of books by the Eric Carle, Dr Seuss and Jill Murphy. We are currently reading Julia Donaldson who will be followed by Roald Dahl.

Writing:
Spelling: Everyone is progressing nicely through the spelling tests. Those children who are reaching spelling list 50 will be getting ten words at a time soon. We're learning alternative spellings for the long vowels at the moment too!

Doing spelling tests

Dictations: Every week we do sentence dictations. Everyone is again making progress. Though plenty still need reminding to include their capital letters and full stops!

Sentence writing: Every week we increase the number of sentences we should be writing about a picture. We are currently on 9. We'll go as far as 12 sentences and then start work on story structures - openings etc.

Grammar:
We learnt about capital letters and full stops in sentences. We've learnt about nouns (and capital letters for proper nouns), verbs and adjectives. We have started work on alphabetical order and have returned to nouns to learn about singular and plural. We'll be returning to verbs to learn about tenses soon too.

Maths numeracy:
We do mental maths practice everyday for five minutes, with children answering 30 sums at various levels of difficulty. As each child successfully completes a level they move on to the next.

We are learning different adding and subtraction strategies. We have covered adding and subtracting one, adding and subtracting ten, adding single digit numbers under 5, adding single digit numbers under 10, adding up to ten, subtracting from 10, subtracting within 5, subtracting within 10, adding tens, adding double-digit numbers. We'll be moving on to doubles and halves and multiplication and division after that. Children who are ready for them are also solving word problems.

In Geometry, we have looked at drawing lines using a ruler, 2D shapes and their properties and this week 3D shapes. We will continue to do geometry every day and will be moving on to positions, axis of symmetry, graphs etc.

Art:
Since the start of the year, we have learnt about mixing primary colours - producing art works like Mondarian, mixing secondary colours - producing art works like Paul Klee, mixing shades and tints - producing art works like Wassily Kandinsky, while also incorporating geometric work into our art. We have also done some self-portraits.

Individual children's learning portfolios can be followed via Seesaw and by looking through the English folder that comes home every month. PLEASE remember to send everything back in the following week!
